New Blog!

Today I launched my new blog! I am so excited and a little sad at the same time!

I am happy  because the new layout is more me, it was more customizable, it shows of my photos better, and it is what I wanted this blog to look like when I started this one!

I am sad because to have a new blog I have to give up this one :(  I am also sad because this will be my last post on this blog :( No point in having two blogs! I am sad because my new blog doesn’t have an option for people to email subscribe to my posts. So for those of you who are subscribed to this blog  THANK YOU for your support, and I hope you still find the time to follow me on my new one!

I will still keep this blog up and running so people who had their photosessions featured will still be able to share their posts!

Check out my new blog at www.justinerussoblog.com!

Ever thine, Ever Mine, Ever Ours…

Yes it’s from “Sex and the City” and yes it’s one of my favourite love letters ever! I bought my sister the book “Love Letters of Great Men” for Christmas, and read this one over Christmas break and thought how perfectly it would fit in a Valentine’s Day post.
So today it’s simple…..a love poem, and a card from Luca!

“Though still in bed, my thoughts go out to you, my Immortal Beloved, now and then joyfully, then sadly, waiting to learn whether or not fate will hear us …

Yes, I am resolved to wander so long away from you until I can fly to your arms and say that I am really at home with you, and can send my soul enwrapped in you into the land of spirits …

No one else can ever possess my heart – never – never – Oh God, why must one be parted from one whom one so loves … Your love makes me at once the happiest and the unhappiest of men …

My angel, I have just been told that the mailcoach goes every day – therefore I must close at once so that you may receive the letter at once …

Be calm – love me – today – yesterday – what tearful longings for you – you – you – my life – my all – farewell. Oh continue to love me – never misjudge the most faithful heart of your beloved.

Ever thine,
Ever mine,

Ever ours.”

FAQ: Equipment

This is my first FAQ post. Many other photographers do them when they have a question that clients, friends or family frequently ask. So feel free to send me your questions and I will post an FAQ blog!

The question I have had the most recently, is what kind of equipment I use, or recommend. I am in no way an expert this is just what I felt works best for me! Lenses are such a personal choice as well, that my advice is to research lenses carefully and think about what you will be using them for, and rent them if that option is available for you!

Currently here is what I use!

Canon 40D is my camera, I have had it for two years, and I love it! The plan is to upgrade to Canon 5D Mark II sometime this summer/fall if things go well! It is a top of the line camera with Canon, and comes with a price tag to match…so I will be saving, saving, saving!

I have 3 lenses…

Canon 50mm 1.8 which is great for low light, you are the zoom so you move around alot!

Canon 28-135mm 3.5-5.6  – this is my very first lens, which I am actually putting up for sale soon, once I get the next lens which is going to replace it.

Canon 24-70mm 2.8L – this lens is on order, so I am patiently awaiting it’s arrival! :)

Canon 580ex ii – this is my flash!  I prefer not to use it at all, but it does come in handy for wedding receptions or super low light indoor locations.

I also have a Gary Fong full cloud diffuser that goes over my flash to diffuse the light. It gets rid of that harsh shadow and makes for much softer light.

I have 3 memory cards…8G, and two 4G

I have a giant camera bag that holds all my gear! It is a bit too big, so I am looking to get a shootsac sometime next year.

In the next year I have a wish list! The Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS USM is on there…so is a shootsac…and the 5D Mark ii and lots lots more!

When I first started all I had was the 40D, and the 28-135mm lens. That was all I used until just a few months ago when I had saved up enough to add the flash, and the 50mm to my collection, and most recently the 24-70mm. So those photographers who think you need a lot of equipment to get started, that is not the case! I did it for two years with just one lens and one camera!

Hope that answers everyones question!

Brand new “Dior” eyes!

I have worn glasses since I was in grade 4.  I found out I needed glasses on a drive to Manning Park for our annual camping trip. My sister, Chantale and I (Mo you were still too young to play) would play the “license plate game”. How this game worked was you had to find a license plate that started with every letter of the alphabet! I think my Dad made it up to stop us from asking, “are we there yet?!”

Well it worked, and we loved this game! This particular year, right before the start of Grade 4, Chantale was CHEATING! And badly cheating, she was writing down license plates that I couldn’t even see! Well when I informed my parents that she was cheating….he got me to read some passing signs and got me to tell him when I could read the license plate on the car infront of us….it was WAY after everyone else!

So off to the eye doctor I went, and I came home with the UGLIEST pair of glasses I have ever seen! (At the time I loved them, but looking back now I see I had poor judgement)  Now it was the early 90’s so you can only imagine what these glassses looked like…they were gold framed and HUGE! SO large that when I smiled, my cheek chub pushed them up higher…yep REAL attractive!

As I got older I fortunatly got many sets of new glasses! I tried contacts in grade 8 and still to this day DEEPLY HATE THEM! I have tried numerous brands and types and they are all so dry….my eyes were just not made for them! I suffer through them for a few hours a week to play volleyball and that is it!

I haven’t gotten a new pair of glasses in 4 years so this past week I got a brand spankin’ new pair….they are so different and I LOVE them! Marco wasn’t too thrilled that they were “Dior” though….oh well ;)

Here they are!

Mountains, snow, burning legs, and the hot tub….

This weekend I took the entire weekend off! No photo editing, no emails, no computer, nothing related to photography….well almost…I did take lots of pictures!

Marco, Luca and I headed up to Big White for our first skiing weekend of the season. The weather was GORGEOUS!! Sunny, warm, and the bluest sky I have ever seen!

Saturday morning, Marco hit the slopes with his Dad, while I….well….everyone who knows me knows I am slow to rise in the morning. I am not a morning person at all…I need my coffee, my eyes look red, and tired, and angry, my hair is, to put it kindly, a disaster, and I am not attractive in the slightest….so needless to say Marco left me at the chalet to fully wake up!

That afternoon, I got all ready to go, and off we went. Now I hadn’t skiied in 4 years, since the year before we got married! Wow can’t believe we have been married 3 years this year! Wow!  So needless to say I was nervous as to how much I would remember from past lessons…and I have to admit, I was fantastic! haha it all came back so fast!  I didn’t fall once, my last run of the day I got going pretty fast! I even out skiied a 5 year old who had been skiing circles around me the two runs before.

Now I am in pretty good shape…I do the Jillian Michaels DVD 3-4 times a week, and walk lots! (have I mentioned before my LOVE for Jillian Michaels? No! well that is another blog post waiting to happen!) Now the Jillian DVDS are mostly legs…lots of squats…lots of lunges. So my legs are in really good shape…..or so I thought. My goal was 5 runs…I made it to 3. Now to be fair they were 3 of the longest runs on the mountain, but still 3….oh well….we have seasons passes so I am sure there will be lots more weekends of skiing to make it to 5!

So that night, we hot tubbed! My legs needed it! They were so sore! That night I slept 12 hours! It was amazing…I haven’t slept that long since I was in University!

Hope you all had a great weekend! I will post some pictures of our weekend soon!

The love of my life

Those of you rolling your eyes thinking this is gonna be a sappy, romantic post about Marco…think again!

Luca obviously is the love of my life! haha I used him as a model to see how my new 50mm did indoors, and it was fantastic! Luca is such a  ham in front of the camera, and is just seriously the love of my life! I don’t think I could possibly love anyone more.

Every morning he demands breakfast immediatly upon waking up…he is so like his father….and then while he burns off breakfast, I eat mine and check my emails.        Luca is so amazingly independent, he wants nothing to do with me in the mornings. He just runs around, laughs to himself, and gets into any trouble he can find!! This morning, I noticed after 10 minutes of absolute silence, that I hadn’t heard from him in awhile

I almost cried when I saw what he was doing…he was sitting IN the bookcase (the bottom shelf is empty), reading a book. If I didn’ tknow better I would have actually thought he was reading to himself…he would pause at every page, smile or laugh to himself, point at a picture, then move on. It was the BEST thing I have ever seen before IN MY LIFE!

hahah I have to add that Marco just walked by, saw the title of this post and very excited said, “Is this one about me?!?!?!” It was really funny, and yes he is the original love of my life. (that was solely for him!)

Here are the pics of my ridiculous son that I took over breakfast two mornings ago….it was his first time trying dried cranberries…he couldn’t stuff them in his face fast enough!

Enjoy the many faces of Luca!

The Punnett Family: Kelowna Family Photos

Kristy, Brendan and Brodie are good friends with my cousins. We met at Mission Creek Park for their family photos and WOW was it ever cold! My car said it was -6 but that was without the wind chill. It was so windy, and so cold! They were all bundled up and ready to go though!

Brodie ran around like crazy on the playground, and I got some great shots of him! This was my first photoshoot completely shot with my new 50mm lens and I loved it! It definitly required more moving around, and by the end of the shoot I was almost warm! haha. I was more engaged in the shoot and I was so happy with the style of pictures I got from it. I may just be a fixed lens photographer!

Brodie was so busy, and he didn’t want to be held much so we got lots of candid shots, and a few great family ones! After about half an hour, all of our noses red, and eyes watering we called it a day as it was just too cold to be outside any longer!

And my absolute favourite from that shoot……
